TOLEDO, SPAIN – OCTOBER 2014 (PART 2) + MADRID
The second half of the day trip to Toledo and the last night of Madrid (mostly revolving around seafood and desserts). This part features the Toledo Cathedral, perhaps one of the biggest Gothic cathedrals in Spain. Enjoy!
If you haven’t read part one, here’s where you start!

Here’s where we left off, the entrance to the Toledo Cathedral

Wow! This place was….just…giant. Gothic in style.

It’s hard to capture scale when you’re so little.

I wish I could go into more detail about the Cathedral separate spaces and history, but I really can’t remember too too much, unfortunately. I believe it was built on top of a mosque which was built on top of another church.

I believe these doors are opened for the Pope only…

The play of light and shadow around the outer nave was gorgeous

A view of the crazy ornate marble/bronze facade of the “El Transparente”, a super Baroque altarpiece.

The Cardinals in the Chapterhouse (and the ceiling)

The newest guy! Looks like a photograph, but it’s a painting.

The El Greco everybody loves so dearly, made for this space

Heading outside to the Cloisters

Chapel/burial chamber with a gorgeous fading fresco

The walls were damaged because of humidity issues, I believe

Parents and Zeen looking around

And now the horrifyingly drippy waxy looking semi-scary but also gloriously magnificent Gothic altarpiece

All the figures are carved in wood

And gorgeous illuminated manuscripts in their treasury as well.

Last looks at the interior of the cathedral

Passing a convent that sells marzipan through a little revolving door.

Made by nuns and I practiced my Spanish to get some.

And winding our way back out through the Moorish gate we came through

Didn’t get to fully explore all the little winding streets

We arrived to the train station pretty early. Enjoyed some coffee while relaxing and waiting for our train

Falling asleep at the train station

Back in Madrid we stopped at a sweets shop near our hotel

Zach overwhelmed by all the options

And soon we were back to the hotel, resting from the day in Toledo

For dinner my parents had a restaurant in mind they had passed in their morning walk, but we did walk through the Mercado San Miguel

Was a mistake to walk through here before dinner…too much temptation

DUN DUN DUNNNNN! DINNER! My parents were NOT joking around with our treat our last night in Madrid. Wowowow. A full seafood platter!

And an icecream sandwich wafer treat

The boba craze has reached Madrid, though perhaps because we were in a very touristy area.

We went over to Alyssa’s and her Italian roommate had all kinds of treats from Italy out to enjoy.

Farewell, Madrid. The next morning we took a train out of there, and arrived in…
More to come…
Much love friends!
